Mazovia

Overview.

In the 12th century, Poland was divided into several Duchies ruled by branches of the House of Piast. Duke Siemowit I (+1262) founded the Mazovian branch [20: tom XVIII (1864); p.224].

Sons of Duke Siemowit I (+1262), divided Mazovia; Conrad II received a part of Mazovia with the capital in Czersk, Boleslas II received a part with the capital in Płock [20: tom XVIII (1864); p.225].

In 1294, after the death of Conrad II, his brother Boleslas II united Mazovia [20: tom XVIII (1864); p.226].

In 1313,  after the death of Boleslas II, his sons divided Mazovia:  the oldest son, Siemowit II obtained the central part of Mazovia, with Wizna, Trojden I and Wenceslas were, respectively, given Czersk and Płock [20: tom XVIII (1864); p.226].

In 1345, after the childless death of Siemowit II, his lands passed to the Dukes of Czersk and Płock.

In 1351, after the childless death of Boleslas III, his Duchy of Płock was divided by his Mazovian cousins, and the King of Poland who took Płock [20: tom XVIII (1864); p.230].

In 1370, after the death of King Casimir III of Poland, the Dukes if Mazovia regained Płock [20: tom XVIII (1864); p.231].

In 1381, after the death of Duke Siemowit III, the Duchy of Mazovia was divided between his sons; Siemowit IV received Płock with Rawa, and John I received Czersk with Warsaw [20: tom XVIII (1864); p.231-232].

In 1462, after the extinction of the sub-branch of Siemowit IV, the Crown of Poland, and the Dukes of Mazovia, great-grandsons of John I, claimed its inheritance, and after a trial the Duchy of Płock was divided between the parties [20: tom XVIII (1864); p.236-237].

In 1495, the whole of the Duchy of Płock was incorporated into the Crown of Poland [20: tom XVIII (1864); p.238].

In 1526, after the extinction of the Mazovian branch of the House of Piast in the male line, the Duchy of Mazovia was incorporated into the Crown of Poland  [20: tom XVIII (1864); p.239].
