Greece ( Ελλάδα )

Overview.

In the 15th century, Greek lands were annexed to the Ottoman / Osman Turkish state.

In 1821, the Greek war of independence began, and next year a Greek assembly at Epidauros declared Greek independence.

In 1829, Greek independence was internationally recognized.

In 1832 the European powers choose Otto (+1867), a son of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, to be the Greek Basileus.

In 1862, the Greek National Assembly deposed Basileus Otto.

In 1863, the Greek National Assembly elected William of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (+1913), a son of King Christian IX of Denmark, as Basileus of Greece (as George I).

Basileus George I's descendents reigned until the end of the Greek Monarchy in 1973.

In 1924, Greece was declared Republic.

In 1935, the Greek Monarchy was restored.

In 1941-1944, during the World War II, the Germans and their allies occupied Greece.

In 1973, Greece was declared Republic.

Notes:

1. Basileus (βασιλευσ), the Greek term for Monarch, is translated differently in European languages, for the Byzantine rulers it is usually as "Emperor", for the modern Greek rulers it is mostly as "King".
