Estonia ( Eesti )
Overview.
In 1219, the King of Denmark started conquering
Northern Estonia.
In 1343, during the Saint George’s Night
Uprising, the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order took over the Duchy of
Estonia, and in 1346, the King of Denmark sold the Duchy of Estonia to the
Order.
In 1559, the Russian forces invaded the lands of
the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order.
In 1561, Gotthard Kettler, the last Master of the
Teutonic Order in Livonia, secularized the Livonian lands of the Order and
converted to Lutheranism. Gotthard Kettler received Courland and Semigallia.
Most of the remaining lands of the Order in Livonia passed to the Grand Duchy of
Lithuania. The King of Sweden took Estonia.
In 1710, the Russian army occupied Estonia
In 1721, by the Treaty of Nystad, Sweden ceded
Estonia to Russia, and Emperor Peter I of Russia took the title Prince (Duke) of
Estonia.
In 1918, Estonia became an independent
country.
