Erbach
Overview.
The House of Erbach descended from a Franconian
Imperial immediate family who held the office of Cup-bearer (Pincerna,
Schenk) [9: 1941; p.200].
In the 13th century, the House of Erbach divided
into three branches, Erbach-Erbach, Erbach-Reichenberg, which later became known
as Erbach-Fürstenau, and Erbach-Michelstadt.
In 1503, the branch of Erbach-Erbach became
extinct in the male line and its possessions passed to the branch of
Reichenberg/Fürstenau [10: Neue Folge; Band V (1988); Tafel 2].
In 1531, the branch of Michelstadt became extinct
in the male line, and its possessions passed to the branch of
Reichenberg/Fürstenau that united all lands of the House of Erbach [10:
Neue Folge; Band V (1988); Tafel 1,3].
In June 1532, the Emperor of the Romans granted
the title of Count to Eberhard of Erbach (+1539) [9: 1941; p.200] [10: Neue
Folge; Band V (1988); Tafel 3] [24: Band I (1783); p.630].
George-Louis I (+1693) and George-Albert II
(+1717), sons of Count George-Albert I of Erbach (+1647), founded, respectively,
the new branches of Erbach-Erbach and Erbach-Fürstenau [20: tome III;
chapitre VIII; tableau No.94].
In 1731, with the death of Count
Frederick-Charles, the branch of George-Louis I (Erbach-Erbach) became extinct
in the male line [10: Neue Folge; Band V (1988); Tafel 4].
Philip-Charles (+1736), George-William (+1757),
and George-Augustus (+1758), sons of Count George-Albert II (+1717), founded,
respectively, the new branches of Erbach-Fürstenau, Erbach-Erbach and
Erbach-Schönberg [10: Neue Folge; Band V (1988); Tafel 5].
In July 1806, the three ruling Counts of Erbach
lost the status of territorial ruler when their lands were mediatized by the Act
of the Confederation of the Rhine [14: Band I; Abtheilung III; Reihe II (1878);
p.4].

Charlotte-Louise-Polyxene of Leiningen-Dagsburg-Hartenburg, who inherited a
share of Limpurg-Gaildorf from her mother, Wilhelmine-Christine of
Solms-Assenheim [10: Neue Folge; Band V (1988); Tafel 7] [20: tome III; chapitre
VIII; tableau No.94]. Count Francis of Erbach-Erbach and
Charlotte-Louise-Polyxene had four daughters: Charlotte-Auguste-Wilhelmine
(1777-1846), Marianne-Louise-Friederike-Caroline (1778-1797),
Caroline-Louise-Wilhelmine (1779-1825) and Louise-Charlotte-Polyxene (1781-1830)
[10: Neue Folge; Band V (1988); Tafel 7]. The share of Limpurg-Gaildorf, which
belonged to Charlotte-Louise-Polyxene of Leiningen-Dagsburg-Hartenburg, was sold
to Württemberg in 1790 [20: tome III; chapitre VIII; tableau
No.94].
