Carinthia ( Kärnten )

Overview.

In the 6th century, Carinthia was settled by Slavic tribes, which formed a new people, called Karantanians, the ancestors of the modern Slovenians. They established a state named Karantania, which in 788 became a part of the Empire of Charlemagne.

In the 9th century, after divisions of the Carolingian Empire, Carinthia became a part of the East Frankish Kingdom (In 961, the East Frankish Kingdom (Germany), became a core of the Holy Roman Empire).
In the 9th-10th centuries, Carinthia was a March of the Duchy of Bavaria.
In 976, Emperor Otto II elevated Carinthia to the rank of Duchy and separated it from Bavaria.

In 1270, after the death of Duke Ulrich III of Carinthia, the land passed to Otakar of Bohemia.

In 1276, King Rudolph I of the Romans confiscated Carinthia, Austria, Styria, and other German possessions of Otakar II of Bohemia.
In 1286, King Rudolph I bestowed the Duchy of Carinthia to Mainhard, Count of Tyrol.

In 1335, with the death of Henry, the male line of the House of Tyrol became extinct, and Emperor Louis IV of the Romans bestowed Carinthia to the House of Habsburg, which had ruled in Austria and Styria.

On September 9, 1379, the brothers Albert (+1395) and Leopold (+1386), the Habsburg Dukes of Austria, Styria and Carinthia, by a treaty concluded in Neuberg-an-der-Mürz, divided the Habsburg lands. Albert III received Austria, Leopold III became the exclusive ruler of Carinthia, Styria, Carniola, the Wendish March, Tyrol and Further Austria.

In 1457, after the death of Duke Ladislas "Posthumous" of Austria, his possessions passed to King Frederick III (+1493), who had ruled in Carinthia and Styria.

In 1564, after the death of Emperor Ferdinand I, Carinthia and Styria were separated from Austria when these Duchies passed to his son Charles (+1590).

In 1619, after the death of Matthias, Emperor and Duke of Austria, his agnate relative Ferdinand II (+1637), Duke of Carinthia and Styria, inherited Austria. Since 1619, Carinthia and Styria were united with Austria.
